The mountain village of Heidal lies at the top of Gudbrandsdalen valley at the gateway to Jotunheimen.
Butter has been churned and cheese made here for ages. First on the farms and from 1920 the valley got its first steam cheese factory, which later became Østlandsmeieriet, today known as Tine. When Tine closed down production in 1995, it was the seed of the "new" Heidal cheese dairy that saw the light of day in 1999. Here are some highlights from the long history.
